On March 4,
1956, seventeen people (seven adults and ten children) gathered for
the first worship service. Gail Jacobus preached the first sermon
and continued preaching for about a year and a half.
They met at the town hall renting it for $3.00 per week. There were
59 in attendance during the course of the first year.
William H. Wilson was the first full-time minister hired in August
1957, followed by Earl Swank. The first church building was
completed on the present property (corner of Rainbow and High
Streets) in March 1962. This was a flat roof brick structure.
Norman Gendt and his family began their ministry on January 1, 1963.
March 13, 1977 ground was broken for the present sanctuary. The new
building was dedicated on November 20, 1977.
Floyd Bosher served as minister from October 1978 - March 1987, with
Joe Bliffen following from September 1987 - July 1998.
Dedication for the Multi-purpose facility was held on April 23,
1995. The addition was comprised of a gymnasium/fellowship hall,
conference room, offices, classrooms and kitchen.
Effective January 1, 1998, the name of the church was changed to
Sunbury Christian Church so that we can more closely identify with
the other independent churches in our area.
Mike Bratten began his ministry with the church in April 1999
continuing to the present.
Extensive remodeling for the present sanctuary, foyer and restroom
was dedicated in October 2000. |
