City Hall and Opera House Plaque Dedication Friday, May 9 at 10:30 a.m. at Delaware City Hall, corner of William and Sandusky Street This 92 foot high structure was destroyed by fire in 1934. Its first floor housed the city government, the police department and jail, and the fire department. The second floor was an auditorium called the Opera House. Civil War Era Remembered with Two Wall Plaques 4:00 p.m. on May 10 Dedicated by Civil War Re-enactors and Delaware County Historical Society on Sandusky Street just north of William Street Plaque One on the west side of Sandusky Street Dedicated to the appearances of African-American abolitionist, Frederick Douglas who spoke in Templar Hall on June 6, 1856, and to General William Tecumseh Sherman after the Civil War. Learn more about these events Plaque Two on the east side of Sandusky Street Dedicated to the 127th Ohio Voluntary Infantry company of African-American soldiers who were trained at Camp Delaware. A famous photograph of the soldiers shown lined up in Sandusky Street in 1864, will be reproduced on the plaque. Learn more about these events Civil War re-enactors group will dedicate the plaques and then march down Sandusky Street to Oak Grove Cemetery. They will lay a wreath at the tomb of fifteen unknown African-American Civil War soldiers who were trained at Camp Delaware. Dedication of Plaque at Oak Grove
Cemetery and Arboretum 12 noon on May 26, 2008 South Sandusky near Cemetery Entrance Oak Grove is a beautiful, rolling cemetery and natural arboretum. It was founded in 1850, but contains the remains of Delaware City’s earliest settlers. The eighty acre site is the resting place of more than 20,000 citizens and is the county’s largest cemetery.
